When I Say Frog Summer 802 Cast Albus Filius Pavel Francois Des The Boss Man The game starts with Filius, Francois and Des in Salle Se Trompier (along with Inrisor, his Parens Markus, and Kevin’s companion) leaving Albus and Pavel as the characters that are blessed by meeting Flambeau. It’s a bright and sunny mid-morning when Pavel and guards see s pillar of fire take off from the top of Mt. Correnant (Dragon Mountain), after a few moments they realize that it’s much too small to be the dragon. It turns out to be Flambeau using some sort of mystical fire conveyance that mere mortals have no chance of comprehending. He’ll say that he went to the mountain to see this Dragon that he’d heard so much about, talked to it for a little while and, having nothing else to say, he came down to Calor Novus. He’s come to talk to Albus and to get Albus and Filius to do some dirty work for him at his new home. After dinner he asks that Albus and he go to a private place to talk. His topics of conversation are: 1-I need you to do something for me, you and Filius, he finds Filius mystically and says that they’ll all leave in the morning to meet him in Salle Se Trompier. a.There are several mystical sites around his new house (he hasn’t thought of a good name for it yet and is open to input) and he doesn’t have time to investigate them all b.He’s picked one that for Albus and Filius to investigate that he thinks the Moors were using or working on or something. He knows this by looking into past fires and seeing Moors there, as well as odd Arabic scribblings at the site that he hasn’t spent time on trying to puzzle out c.Hearing that Albus has been learning Terram (or enough to knock down buildings at any rate) and knowing how good Filius is with fire and light he’s decided that they’re perfect for this mission of going into a chasm that probably descends into the earth 2-I understand that you’ve not been spending your time as I told you to do. I think that I sent you a letter saying that you need to worry about something other than this Dragon. You have plenty of Magi here to work on that issue, I’ve assigned you a more important task that you’re not working on. That needs to stop. a.I understand that you think that you need to solve the Dragon issue, you don’t and you won’t as you’ll be doing your job instead. b.Why do you think that you’re in charge here? Why do you think that I picked you? i.Fililus is stronger – easily the fourth strongest mage in the House ii.Inrisor is mad but very dangerous never the less iii.Orella is a destroyer of nations waiting for the chance to go off iv.Saverio, well he’s unique v.And then there’s you, you’re not the strongest, you’re not the most dangerous, no Albus you were picked because I thought that you’d be the one that would do what needed to be done, and that would follow instructions. Was I wrong to put you in this position? March to the Sea Nothing happens during the march to Salle Se Trompier. The Boss Man II They arrive at Salle Se Trompier and meet the rest of the cast. Filius has his chance to confront Flambeau about his pocket hedgewizard if he wishes. Flambeau will talk to Filius about his odd twilight scars and will seem sad that Filius seems to be having such a hard time with his magics though it does seem to be making him more powerful. Filius will be able to fill Albus in on the results of the reading that a small sub set of the Salle Se Trompierians have been doing off and on during the past year (need notes to give to Filius while the first part of the game is going on). The same day the Flambeau et al arrive Iago from Dormus Ortus arrives too. He’s come to SST as he heard from Salverio that the “Moorish Books” were moved there and he’s come to see if he can get them out of Patches hands, running into the owners of the books is a very happy coincidence. If he’s told about the types of scrolls that they have he’ll be very interested that they had that many history books, and seems interested in only those books to the exclusion of even the correspondence (which is very odd). If questioned he’ll say that he needs proof before he can come to firm conclusions but, if they recall, he said that the Moors seemed to be looking for something and if it’s something old that would make more sense. He’s reasoning from documents and information that they’re not privy to so it shouldn’t make much sense. He also offers to trade for some one shot magic items, he’s interested in damaging spells with a moderate penetration score, when asked why he needs them he’s vague telling them that he lives in a dangerous place and they all have enemies. After the death of his previous Tytalus he’s thinking that being armed might not be such a bad idea. There is more to what he’s thinking but he’s far too good to tell what’s really going on. He will offer research on the books as well as one shot magic items in exchange for the damaging dingi. Flambeau sends them off to do his dirty work as he’s going to Durenmar for some sort of important meeting that he doesn’t describe and won’t talk about. He gives them a map of the location that he wants them to investigate. Over the Mountains The journey across the mountains is eventful only to the extent that the weather is horrid the whole time. Salty veterans of the Moorish wars may well recognize this as the passive aggressive techniques of the enemy! Or it’s just a wet summer in the mountains. The excitement and chance to bust out the dice is provided by a mudslide late one night, if they’re camped on a hill or something then they feel the hill convulse and dump them into the mud (damn earth elementals!) if they’re in hollow then they’re just screwed per nature. The mud is think and gooey and coming right at them. First round Quick 6+ to get out of the way, if you fail Strength of 5+ to get to higher ground. Second round climbing rolls if you got out (7+) to get away. If you didn’t you’re being crushed and sucked under the mud, soak 10 every round, keep your head above the top is Str 6+, if you fail soak 15 and you’re in danger of death. And Through the Woods The site that they’re investigating is to the south west of Leon, where the Moorish fort was and where Val Negra is being built on the site of the tower that Albus destroyed. The terrain is rough, the rocky hills are covered by scrub brush and small twisted stunted trees that are about 6-7’ tall on average. While visibility is generally ok, there are always places where one could be ambushed by sneaky folks. Oddly this doesn’t happen. The come to the start of a vale, which gets progressively narrower, steeper, and darker as it worms its way back into the mountains. There is a small dribble of water that runs along the bottom of the vale, it’s about a foot wide and an inch deep and slowly moving but it runs towards the narrow end where it will disappear into the cave at the end. At the end of the vale, where they sides of the cut are about 6’ apart and the walls about 12 to 15’ high, this opens up into a 30 yard round area with scrub oak on the out side edges, the slope is shallow at the oaks and then steepens out to about 20’ high. It would be very difficult to climb out or into this area. The dribble of water flows underground into a 2’ high 4’ wide opening so you’ll have to crawl through to get into it and you can’t take any pack animals with you. There is a firecircle outside under some scrub oak, it’s ancient, a mound of ash exists from generations of camp outs, and a refuse mound which contains generations of animal bones, ash, human refuse, none of it newer than a year. On the inside the water has formed a wide shallow (1-2” deep) pool before running down deeper into the cave in another dribble. The pool is about 10 yards across, the main cave area is about twenty yards across and varies in height from 3’ on the edges to nearly 6 feet in the center. There is a fire pile here too, though not a big, it seems that the ash is collected up and dumped out side so as not to fill up the cave with ash. This pile has ash on top that it is maybe six months old. A wise person that listed to that Flambeau said would think that maybe this fire was used for the images of fires past spell that he said he used. On the walls around the edge of the cave are numerous etching and paintings, they area all Paleolithic stick figure drawings in style they show hunting scenes, groups of figures shooting arrows at animals, and bringing the animals to a place and piling them up perhaps as an offering. There is some writing on the walls that is hard to see (per 9+) and harder to read all of (scribe Arabic 12+) the whole of the text is below, it’s not one paragraph, it’s spread out around the outside of the room in bits and pieces, all of it under pictures of stuff but you’d need some sort of enigmatic wisdom or something to link the one to the other. Offerings to appease? Meat only, though. The other locations don’t have as many markings, is that important? Deeper, have to get deeper. Why were the bodies buried inside? Angeboda? An ancient power? Down, down, the Goblins down The cave continues on, about 5’ high sloping downwards with the dribble of water leading the way. This continues for quite some time, the tunnel weaving back and forth, the grade getting steeper at points and more gentle at points, and once it bottoms out and they have to wade through the icy cold water up to their chests with the top of the cave just inches above their heads. Not a pleasant trip at all. After about six hours of this the cave opens into a chamber or series of limestone chambers very high (20’ or so) and very wide, it pretty in here and those inclined could believe that they’ve found a place of power. After wandering around a bit a search roll of 6+ will find a burial pit that has been excavated partially. The dug out part is about 12’ long and 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep. It’s next to a particularly impressive grouping of stalagmites, if you stand at about 5 feet tall and you’re at the far side of the pit they look just like the bottom teeth of a gaping maw with some stalactites behind forming the top teeth. It’s creepy here. In side the pit are the skeletal remains of humans, underneath the humans there are some animal bones too which, if you dig more will continue down for another couple of feet before the pit bottoms out. The bodies are all very old (100’s of years if you have a way of telling that pre-archeology) and have no obvious wounds on the bones. The exception to this is a body that is buried under some newly shifted dirt at one end of the pit. A new pit wasn’t dug for this body, the pit floor was dug out and a new body interred. This body is of a man of slightly less than medium height dressed in Moorish robes. He’s been there for about 18 months judging by the state of the bones, he was killed by a blow to the back of the head and around his right leg is the prop message. Apparently wrapping it around his leg under his clothes to hide it worked out for him. There are several paths out of this cavern, none that appear more used than the others unless a great search roll (12+) is made in which case there are some slight markings of ash rubbed into the wall of one particular opening at about 8’ of height. Hiding in the Dark It turns into a labyrinth as the caves twist and turn and join the one into the other. Enigmatic wisdom is the key to finding ones way through this with out spending weeks at it. How much food did they bring along?? If they keep making 12+ search rolls they can follow the markings that appear every now and again through the maze and get through more quickly. This is to consume their food and scare them into wondering if they’ll starve or something. Eventually they find their way through the maze and into the caverns beyond, these caverns are inhabited, or were, by a race of pale mostly humans who are few in numbers these days but old and wicked. There are various different buildings or hovels around the caves that are not currently inhabited, as they advance deeper into the caverns they get the feeling that they’re being watched, this keeps with them when ever they’re alone from here on out. At an opportune moment they’ll be attacked, the best defense here is bright light as the creatures are scared of the light. After little difficulties they get through this “inhabited” portion of the caverns to the Great Temple beyond. The temple is a 3 step ziggurat pyramid made out of black basalt stone about 50 yards high, about 200 yards on each side with a wide open area on the top. This open area has an altar in the middle of it at all the exposed surfaces are carved and engraved in a quasi meso American manner. The top of the altar is carved like a giant mouth, it looks very much like the mouth formed by the stalagmites and stalactites from earlier in the game. It’s all horrible. Frogs et al They all can jump like the frogs legs spell which, the first time they attack, is a big enough surprise for them to get a +3 on their initiative. Warriors: Init +2, Atk +12, Def +12, Dam +4, Soak 10 Shaman: Init +1, Atk +1, Def +6, Dam +4, Soak 10, Stealth 7 (Hiding) Bag of Bones: each bone can make one person take a fatigue Totem: make a person age five years Home Again After not being able to figure out what to do they will eventually decide to leave, two choices either back the way they came or deeper into the cave. If they choose back they can get out with out further issue. If they choose deeper then they enter another labyrinth and eventually work their way through to, wonders of wonders: A Terram vis source!! This vis source is in an Incrediblesesque volcanic chamber, there’s a narrow bridge that you need to be immune to fire to cross to get to the glowing pool of vis in the middle of the puddle of magma. From this location they can find their way out of the caverns and emerge into the light of day about 20 miles south of there they went in. 20 miles south is further south than the Asturians actually control so it’s sort of in “Indian Country” for lack of a better term but it is a much more direct route to the vis than wandering around in the caverns. Salle Se Trompier Lore Filius, Des, and Francois After the great victory over the trees in Britain you’ve returned with Inrisor and Markus (the mostly crippled Parens) to Salle Se Trompier where you gather that Markus will be a guest for a while. Patch seems bemused by the company but he is, at this point, not complaining about everyone else moving into his home when ever they get bruised. While you’re there Patch mentions the piles of scrolls and other stuff that you dropped off after defeating the Moors, he’s eager to clean out the room that it’s in, saying that if injured Magi keep showing up they’ll need the space for people, so please figure out what you want done it. All together there about 250 scrolls. He tells you that they’ve done some reading on it and they’ve broken out what they’ve got into the following piles: Mystic Texts – these seem to be texts that the Moors either use to teach their arts to each other or discussions, letters, etc. dealing with their arts. It’s all mumbo jumbo to them but who knows what the brains of House Flambeau may be able to do with it. There are about 25 scrolls of this type all in Arabic. Historical Documents – these are a collection of documents that appear to be from the library of a historian or from a university of some type. There are records of the Roman conquest, the Carthaginian wars in Iberia, the “barbarian” conquest that took Iberia from the Romans and of course the Moorish conquest. There are about 75 scrolls of this type, evenly divided between Latin and Arabic, obviously this means that some of the documents are translations of original documents. These scrolls are also generally the biggest or longest of all. Accounting Documents – there is a large collection of documents that relate to the raising of the army and the provisioning of that army. In addition there are documents that relate to tribute and taxation of the northern half of Iberia. There are about 100 scrolls of this type, all of them in Arabic. Correspondence and Misc. Documents – the last 50 or so scrolls form this pile, they’re either letters from an assortment of people to an assortment of people or other documents that didn’t fit into any of the other piles. These are all in Arabic as well.
