Character Story
Saverio was born in Rome to an unwed mother, Francesca. His mother never spoke of his father and became easily upset whenever the subject was brought up. Early in life, the kindly parish Priest, Father Peter, looked after Saverio and his mother, often ensuring they always had a place to live and were never too hungry, nor too cold. At the age of 6, Saverio’s mother died of consumption. After his mother’s death, Father Peter took Saverio and looked after him, teaching the ways of the faith. For the next few years Peter educated Saverio in Latin, Artes Liberales and theology.
At the age of 9, Saverio’s Gift started manifesting itself. While others became weary of Saverio, Father Peter suspected what was happening, for Peter’s younger brother, now called by Utal, suffered from the same Gift. Peter took Saverio to Utal, who confirmed Peter's suspicion and in turn took Saverio as an apprentice.
As it turned out, Saverio’s gifts were very similar to Utal’s bent, Ignem and its manipulation. Over the next 15 years Saverio was trained as a Hermetic mage in the House Flambeau. Utal was hard driving, always insisting that Saverio must be worthy of the "Gift" God bestowed upon him. Utal was obsessed that the order was important to fight evil and injustice and must grow. The Gift was rare and must be preserved, nurtured and directed to serve God and aid his children when needed.
During Saverio's apprenticeship, he stayed in contact with his Father Peter and on occasion would journey with his master when he visited his brother. Where Peter was compassionate, patient and understanding, Utal was demanding, impatient and fearless. Despite some obvious differences, they were both Pious and sought to right wrongs. They both also lamented the fact that they never had children of their own (Utal because he took his Longevity Potion early in life and Peter because he took a vow of chasity), and often held that as their one big regret in life.
Upon completing his gauntlet, Saverio spent two years at Durenmar studying his unique insights to the arts and awaiting a chance to serve God and the Order in establishing a covenant, recruiting hedge wizards and standing up to evil and injustice. It was well known that Saverio spoke his mind regarding "join or die". Death is the last resort, for the Gift from God is so special and rare.
In his 27th year Utal asked he take a message to Peter, who was ministering to the mountain towns in the Alps. Upon arriving at Peter’s church, Saverio found it under attack by godless bandits. The attack had been underway for some time and the church was badly damaged. Saverio drove away the bandits. All inhabitants of the church were dead, except for Peter and his acolyte. The acolyte’s wounds were grievous and he did not survive the night. Peter’s wounds were equally grievous, but he did survive the night, as was God's will. Saverio spent the entire autumn season tending to his old mentor’s wounds. Slowly Peter regained his strength. Winter set in, and they were trapped at the church for the season. During this time Saverio furthered his religious studies with Peter.
When spring came, Peter was still suffering after effects from his injuries. Saverio stayed and helped minister to the mountain communities. During the next 3 years he learned much about people, as well as the church. All during this time Peter continued to work on persuading Saverio to accept the calling of God. It wasn’t an issue of conflicting loyalties between the Order and the Church, but an issue of worthiness. Was Saverio worthy to serve God and minister to his children? Father Peter certainly thought so, and finally convinced Saverio to become Ordained. (The story and of his ordination is left for another tale). Therefore, in his 31st year, Saverio was ordained to the Catholic Church. Shortly after the ceremony, Father Peter directed Saverio follow his calling and let the Lord guide his path. As the Lord would have it, Saverio arrived at Calor Novus one month after ordination. Early tales of Calor Novus always caught Saverio's attention, and he believed he could make a difference with aiding this covenant.
