Synopsis
In the northern portion of the Pyrenees Mountains lies a secluded high altitude valley. This valley was inhabited in Roman times but has since become uninhabited for reasons that we shall see. A old Roman sorcerer MANLIUS SERVILLUS owned the valley and it's tenant farmers. He was powerful for an ancient magus but that didn't save him at the end. He lived in this remote place as he had located an even more ancient crypt in the valley and wanted to investigate it. Knowing that it was guarded by "as foul a specter as the barbarians had ever dreamt of" he decided that he needed mystical aide to ensure his survival while exploring the crypt so he tried a summoning of a local nature spirit to help him out. He got something that he didn't expect (THE MONSTER) and paid for his mistake with his life. THE MONSTER was then free and closed the valley to all outsiders. Eventually the tenant farmers died off either being killed while trying to leave or natural causes but not before they figured out that MANLIUS SERVILLUS was the cause of their problems. He did not long survive this discovery.
Years and years pass with people trying to enter the valley being killed off by the MONSTER and eventually the place becomes taboo to the Basques and other mountain people. Then the Moors invade Spain and a band of Catalan refugees, fleeing from the fighting in the south, run into the valley. Several are killed in the pass into the valley but perhaps 300 survive and settle in the valley. Occasionally they used to try and send out scouts to find a way out of the valley but as these inevitably resulted in the deaths of the scouting party they gave up after a time and settled in to enjoy their safety from the Moors if not from the MONSTER.
The original tribal leader of the group was RAOUL (now called KING RAOUL)and his very beautiful wife was ADRA. They rebuilt the village at the north end of the valley (VENTURA) and settled in for a peaceful life. This lasted for about six years or until the start of the feud, ADRA left RAOUL for his oldest son SOLOMAN and the tribe was split in two with half of the people staying with RAOUL in VENTURA and the other half decamping in the night and founding their own village in other ruins at the south end of the valley. This town is now called DESIDERO. RAOUL decided to fight for his way ward wife and thus the feud began with RAOUL attacking SOLOMAN and taking back ADRA. SOLOMAN and his band swore revenge and the killings began.
Sixty years have gone by and still the fighting rages though both sides are but shadows of what they used to be.
THE MONSTER: The monster was supposed to be a helper monster but it turned out to be something rather different, a monster of SHADOW and STONE.
MIGHT: 30
ATK: +15
DEF: +5
DAM: +15
SOAK: +20
Damage: Monster is HUGE so 10 points per level
POWERS:
Enter and Pass-through Stone - can "move" into stone and "move" back out as easily as moving into water.
Move Stone - Can throw rocks around or cause rock slides.
Hide in Shadows - Very hard to spot if not moving. 15 + to be seen if you know what you're looking for.
Aura of Terror - Bravery rolls to avoid running away from the monster. First target 9
THE VALLEY: The valley is very lush and rather warmer than anyone would think for where it is. There are natural springs at the sites of both of the villages (VENTURA in the north and DESIDERO in the south) as well as a stream that runs from east to west it starts in the mountains on the east side of the valley and the water runs underground in a large pond at the west edge of the valley. The land is good farm land though it is mostly over grown with short tree's, scrub and brush covering most of the valley floor.
VENTURANS: These are the inheritors of KING RAOUL. There are a total of 24 people in this village when the game starts. Their current KING is KING ALFONSO, grandson of the original RAOUL, a strong fellow of 27 years, he is married to the beautiful ADRA.
The village is a small cluster of stone buildings (old Roman ruins) with loose stone packed with mud walls joining them together. This is surrounded by about 100 yards of farm land that in turn is surrounded by a wall of thorny hedges that are almost impossible to get through. The buildings are one story with there being a two story tall "watch tower" that is built into the ruins of the old manor house. The family crypt is in the basement of this house.
DESIDERANS: These are the inheritors of KING SOLOMAN and are the implacable foes of the VENTURANS. There are only 16 living DESIDERANS when the game starts but they have found in their holding the workshop of the ancient MANLIUS which has provided them with some magical firepower that their enemies lack.
The village is similar to VENTURA with a core of old Roman era foundations walled together surrounded by a belt of farmland surrounded by an impenetrable wall of thorny bushes.
Their current KING is SOLOMAN IV who is no descendant of the first SOLOMAN but is the craftiest of all the DESIDERANS. SOLOMAN IV has the GIFT and is using the natural insight that he's gotten to figure out how some of the gewgaws that they've dug up work.
Magic Items:
THE MASK: A Greek style theatric mask with the face of an "angry guy". The MASK acts like a CREO MENTUM spell that numbs the will to resist of the target, making them kneel down and wait taking no other action. The resistance roll is STA needing a 9+ to avoid the effect. Only works on one target at a time, though there is a “dread” effect in a 10 pace radius. The MASK is also cursed, if it is put on it may not be taken off barring divine intervention (which will destroy it) or arcane research.
THE PIPES: The PIPES are a set of PAN FLUTES that, when a particular tune is played, will do a Confusion of the Numbed Will type effect that makes the victims stand around and sway to the music.
THE HORN: The HORN will do a ARC OF FIREY RIBBONS type spell that will magically destroy any combustible material in its area of effect in two turns. If someone is in the area of effect they take +10 damage but should be able to get out of the way in the second round if they can move.
THE CRYPT: This is what MANLIUS called the ancient ruins that he located in the valley and on top of which he built his workshop. If one were to be in the basement of the work shop and one could some how avoid the confusing effects of a "SHROUDED GLEN" spell one would find a dressed stone wall covered with ancient writings. These writings, in addition to being all over the wall, also form the strong impression of a doorway. It is through this doorway that MANLIUS was intending to pass with the aid of his "helper monster" but alas he never had the chance.
THE GAME
Robert has sent one PEDRO to the covenant to lead them to this valley that he has learned of. The stories that he has heard of the valley sound to him like it could be one of these "lay lines" that he heard about in the FALL. PEDRO has been to the covenant before and so there is no overt reason to distrust him.
PEDRO tells them that Robert told him the following:
Go to the covenant at Calor Novus (it's out side Nohede, you know it's where my father lives) and tell them that I think I've found something that they're looking for. It's called a "lay line" and it's in the mountains north and west of where they are. You remember where it is right? We were following the trail that the priests from BAIRRITZ use to get to SANTIAGO when those guys started following us and we took off cross country? Yeah they wanted their furs back, I know that, but you remember the valley right? Yes that's the one! Tell them that the old lady told us that no one goes there as it's a place where darkness lives. No I don't know what she meant. Right, sure, but that she told us that back in the ancient times the togas used to live there but now no one goes there. Well it's the kind of thing that they're interested in there, very mysterious and dangerous. And tell my father that my mother is doing much better and she'll be there in the summer time so they can get married. And tell them that I can't come because of that thing that we've got going on with the Atiersas clan but I'll be there when I can. So here I am to take you there.
They leave...
It's not a hard journey but they need to make some survival rolls to get enough food to eat on the way. 9+ is golden, 6+ is -1 fatigue.
Into the Valley
The way is surprisingly easy to get into despite the fact that its not been used for a very long time (going from the north to the south). It looks at times like it's a game trail but then you come to places where the road has obviously been improved but long long ago.
Eventually they end up in a pass. The pass is fairly wide (say 40 feet on average across) but is over grown and wanders back and forth. The first sign that not everything is on the up and up is that it gets dark fairly quickly. The players are walking through a REGIO to get into the valley. The MONSTER will attack them but they should have some warning that something is amiss and so they can try and get ready to rumble.
The objectives of the encounter are to 1) kill off PEDRO 2) show the monster and experience it and 3) get them to run into the valley to get away from the monster.
First Valley Encounter
A player or a small group of players will encounter the natives of the Valley in such a manner as they're far enough away to see but not close enough to intervene right away.
Two VENTURANS (out of the total of 24) are out hunting for vile DESADERANS they split up to try and trap the one that they think that they've found and one of the two is being attacked by the MASK wearing DESADERAN.
The first VENTURAN (Alberto) is killed barring a miracle as he's on his knees when the party first sees him. After he dies the second VENTURAN OSCAR comes on the scene and, if there is no intervention by the players he too will die.
If there is intervention on behalf of OSCAR he will happily lead the players back to VENTURA and tell them the story of the feud and his little role in it. If there is none then he dies and the players can try and talk to the MASK who is not a conversationalist and who will, in fact, try and kill the players if he can.
