Synoposis:
Flambeau's most recent aprentice, Elaine, and her apprentice, Luc, arrive with a letter from Flambeau. The weather is colder than usual. Sylvie checks up on Lord Fang and gets his story (see lore). As they travel they come upon Gustov and his mercenaries. They are ringed by large wolves and an ice giant. The players intervene saving Gustov and a dozen of his men. After seeing what the magi can do, they decide to join them. The (now larger) group arrives at Trenus's place. Winter is strong here. They meet his family and staff, including Marcel who takes a fancy to Filius. They end up entering a winter regionne where they fight icy ghosts. When they return to the vally that Trenus occupies they see that ice and snow has covered everything outside the aegis. Ice is beginning to encroach on the tower itself. The forces of the north are arrayed against them. They make a stand on the top of the tower dealing out great destruction and deflecting boulders hurled at them by giants. Bernardo slips out to assassinate the opposing magi. They prevail and Gon, son of Jur is slain.

Lore
Foreseti:The name comes from the Norse god of justice, who was the son of Balder and Nanna, daughter of Nepr (Nep)
Trenus of Bonisagus
When you hear the name Trenus, you remember the boy name Olivier. The quiet Frankish boy with the dark eyes and secretive smile. Olivier was always a very studious boy, often characterized as aloof. He was the subject of some ridicule during training, as he would be better classified as a “follower of Trimona.” This made him a bit of an outcast among the apprentices. However, the two of you were caught together as victims of one of the many hazing rituals younger apprentices endure. He was in awe of the amount of power you had at even that young age. In turn, you were impressed by his cleverness. As often happens, bonds of friendship were formed from your joint trial. Over the years the friendship only deepened. Once you got to know him you discovered his wicked sense of humor and wit. As boys sometimes do, the two of you experimented. Sadly, his tastes ran a different direction than yours. But these encounters did not put a strain on your friendship. As you both progressed in your training, there were less opportunities to spend time together. After you finished your Gauntlet, he later confessed to you the night before he could not sleep and was possibly more nervous for yours than his own. Though not as close by that time, there was still a strong affection for one another as you prepared to go your separate ways.
Over the years you've had little opportunity to correspond other than the occasional letter when word of you exploits had reached him. You are aware that he is living in an informal covenant of one a few days out from Aachen, the winter home of Charlemagne and political center of his empire. Knowing Trenus well, you harbor suspicions that he resides there to keep an eye on the Jerbiton covenant in the area.
Palantine Chapel in Aachen
The chapel of Charlemagne's palace, the greatest monument of the current Carolingian mini-renaissance. The common name for the city is Aachen, but many Franks call it Aix-la-Chapelle.
At this time, the chapel is still under construction (started in 792, completed in 805). However, the main nave and monumental atrium have been completed and words of the chapel's beauty, as a tribute to God, has reached your ears.
Fang's Story
Fang has been spending some time with “his” pack. By the way, did he mention that cute little bitch Whiteface has been sniffing around him a lot? Anyway, they took down the biggest deer any wolf has ever seen. This thing was taller at the shoulder than Sylvie. But the thing smelled funny. Fang realized there was something on it's head like that stuff the fighting men wore. Obviously this thing belong to someone. But, it still tasted great! Oh yea, the horns were funny – much different than a regular deer.
Fang has carried back a piece of leather strap.
General Lore, Spring 801
The winters here are always mild. However, this particular winter has been stubborn and reluctant to leave. The trees should be greening up more than they have. The villagers had delayed their planting for two weeks before finally seeing some sort of sign that it was okay to proceed. A sign that was probably obvious to those who work with the earth.
This type of thing has ripple effects. According to the locals, there has been a slight increase in predator activity in the area. As if there was an increase in the population of foxes, wolves, etc. There have also been more stories of weird things attributed to Fey activity.
Inrisor has not been seen around the covenant much. But a flurry of activity, stemming from directions issued from his room, it taking place. Every day closer to the end of winter, a sort of background tension seems to rise. The staff mutters that as the days begin to grow longer, his temper grows shorter – not that he was the most patient of the magi to begin with.
Last week a monk came with several very carefully packed maps for Inrisor. He seemed a good and quiet sort. He was a bit put off by the feel of the covenant, but seemed to accept it well enough. A few hours later he practically ran from the main house and out the gates with Saverio chasing after him. His precious maps hastily rolled up in their skins.
Finally the grip of winter seems to be broken. Orella seems much more relaxed and the tension in the air is beginning to become anticipation.
That or the staff will be happy to see Inrisior get out of the main house for a while.
There is another complication. When Albus and Filius returned from the Pyrenees, Albus had in tow a gaggle of foreign women. This has caused it's own disruption in the household. They don't like the food, they don't speak much Frankish, they keep to themselves all day, and don't seem interested in helping out around the place. The men are unhappy because Albus was pretty clear about what would happen to the first man, or men, who gave one of them the proper treatment for foreign women who are spoils of war. The women seem terrified to leave the grounds, terrified of the few men at arms, and oddly more at ease when magi are present.
Lore for Sylvie
Fang has been gone for several weeks. This is not terribly unusual. You know that he has been running with a local pack recently and he is a young male and it's almost springtime. Boys will be boys.
Now that you are at the end of your first trimester, the changes in your body are becoming more obvious. You were relieved to find out both of your children are indeed human. It's also very possible that they will have unusual gifts of their own. The morning sickness has passed. You'd like to avoid going through that again if you can help it. Certainly an appropriate application of corpus could be used to mitigate some of the effects. But once Albus pointed out that the strong aura probably didn't need the help of additional magics to affect the kidlings, you stopped. You think he was joking, but sometimes its hard to tell...
The biggest effects you are feeling right now are: a decline in your endurance, less flexibility, your back is a bit sore after a lot of physical activity, and the last time you changed shape – it was painful (more so than the usual discomfort).
The female staff dote on you and the men seem a bit suspicious around you – like you might be from another world or what you have could be contagious.
Letter from Flambeau
Albus and Filius,
It looks like things turned out well enough here. This place in the valley is actually a bit interesting. A couple things need attention.
Albus - One of my former apprentices, Elaine, needs to spend some time training her apprentice and doesn't have the proper summae on hand. I seem to remember you having a decent copy of that Ignem summae on hand. Would you mind if she spent a season or two there doing some training? Good. Thank you.
Filius – I've received word that a small covenant, belonging to Trenus of Bonisagus, is having some problems with some fairly significant hedge wizards. I realize this is a bit far a field for you, but I'd like you to take as many of your sodalis as possible and head up to his place near Aachen. Elaine will provide specific directions as she's been there in the past. Take care of this post haste! Send a report back to me by the end of summer. I'll be here in the valley through at least then.
Yours in the Order, etc.
Flambeau
