Sacamantecas – looked like a man, but which lived in wild places and fed on human manteca or fat. A man-killer, in fact. When brought to bay, it made a shrill whinnying sound; except when it had fed upon some unfortunate victim and was glutted with fat, it appeared skinny and pitiful. Called by the Muslims the mantequero. After it’s “killed” it basically becomes pure spirit and it then needs to kill (or have killed) a person after which it can reassume it’s physical form. This killing can take the form of: 1)Just being present when some one (a human not a fairy or mystical beastie) dies (natural or unnatural). The “spirit” of the Sacamantecas can only move as fast as a slow walk so it’s not easy to be in the “right place at the right time” especially out in the sticks. 2)It can use it’s might to cause people to be easy to provoke or to make the depressed suicidal. When it is reborn there is a high pitched screeching whinnying sound so if you’re nearby you’ll know that something unwholesome is going on. Diplomacy – Winter 791 There are three issues that need to be addressed by the players to keep the area calm and collected. Father Gustavo from Baron Karl’s lands has created a stink in the Church about the Magi it’s your standard “stealing from the Church by hiring away my pet wood carver” deal. The villagers are mad that their harvest was poor and they blame the mages for getting rid of Old Meg, walking around town with flaming maces, harboring known outlaws, and spitting on the sidewalks. Claudio the Woodcarver is mad for the following reasons: 1) His work area is next to the forge and Klaes is too loud. 2) Efrain talks to him as if he were an equal. 3) He has yet to be officially recognized as the head of the endeavor and is concerned that the Magi don’t act like they work for him in front of the underlings. 4) His wife is unhappy due to the oddness of the Magi and worries that it might rub off on her girls. For those reasons and other passive aggressive ones he is attempting to start a work stoppage. Event One – Covenant Meeting The mages have been in residence for a year or so and it’s time for the first ever meeting of the Covenant! Points for Discussion: Aegis of the Hearth – when are we going to be able to cast it? Vis Source(s) – who has to collect it? Are there other ones? Money – Are we making a profit here? Is there a “Covenant Document”? Unhappy Villagers – Is there a way to ignore them? Is killing them all a viable option? Unhappy Artisans – Claudio is moodier than usual, something may be up with that. Event Two – Letter from the Abbot A letter out lining the problem with Father Gustavo arrives addressed to Albus. The Abbot suggests that they get together to talk about this and, as he’s not been there to see what they’ve done with the place, he’s planning on stopping by. Event Three – Death of Old Meg Scene: Old Meg is on a hill top or small rise, mages are below her, she mocks them, they blast her and she tumbles out of sight. The first person that comes into line of sight of her sees her mutter a few words and smile while looking at that person. She then dies. As soon as she’s dead there is a high pitched screeching whinnying sound and up from the ground or out of a shadow or some such the Sacamantecas lunges onto the witness and the fight is on! Stats: Attack +20 Damage +6 Defense +10 Soak +3 Might 20 Event Four – Arrival of the Abbot Adding some confusion into the mix the Abbot arrives to discuss matters with the Magi. He’s a decent affable man who doesn’t want to cause too much of a fuss but there are matters that need to be taken care of and he wants to be sure that feathers are as unruffled as possible. He’s mostly here to have something else for the Mages to be worried about while the Sacamantecas is roaming about killing folks. Event Five – Return of the Sacamantecas There is a wailing from the village that marks the return of the Sacamantecas to this plane of existence. If it can get through the Aegis it will attack again and probably be killed again. Lather rinse repeat until it is removed by the finding of Old Meg’s Hut. Event Six – Deal With It The above threads keep playing off of each other until they are resolved one by one. Event Seven – Old Meg’s Hut The only two ways to get rid of the Sacamantecas are to either be killed by it or to remove it’s sending mechanism. This mechanism is in Old Meg’s Hut which is concealed by her arts. The longer she is “dead” the easier it will get to find, once it is found there is a little model of the Covenant site made out of clay and some of her blood, destroy it and the sending is removed. Albus Lore This lore is information that you may or may not want to share at the first ever official all hands meeting of the Calor Novus Covenant. Aegis of the Hearth – when are we going to be able to cast it? Vis Source(s) – who has to collect it? Are there other ones? Money – Are we making a profit here? Is there a “Covenant Document”? Aegis of the Hearth – when are we going to be able to cast it? Vis Source(s) – who has to collect it? Are there other ones? Money – Are we making a profit here? Is there a “Covenant Document”? And, though you don’t generally go down there, you have over heard the grogs and coven folk talk about how the villagers are having a hard time of things recently what with the bad harvest and all. Gael Lore This lore is information that you may or may not want to share at the first ever official all hands meeting of the Calor Novus Covenant. Aegis of the Hearth – when are we going to be able to cast it? Vis Source(s) – who has to collect it? Are there other ones? Money – Are we making a profit here? Is there a “Covenant Document”? And, though you’ve been too busy to actually talk to anyone who isn’t a Magus, you’ve heard the covenfolk talking about how some woodcarver isn’t happy about something or other. Something to do with his kids. Or his wife. Sylvie Lore This lore is information that you may or may not want to share at the first ever official all hands meeting of the Calor Novus Covenant. Aegis of the Hearth – when are we going to be able to cast it? Vis Source(s) – who has to collect it? Are there other ones? Money – Are we making a profit here? Is there a “Covenant Document”? And you’ve been out and about and have had some reason to hear the villagers complain about the Magi and how they need too much food and they don’t worship (which would be hard to do with out a church but hey, if they don’t take this Christianity thing too seriously it’s not a concern of yours), and how things have really gone bad since some flaming mace guy scared off their wise person. Kris’ Mage Lore This lore is information that you may or may not want to share at the first ever official all hands meeting of the Calor Novus Covenant. Aegis of the Hearth – when are we going to be able to cast it? Vis Source(s) – who has to collect it? Are there other ones? Money – Are we making a profit here? Is there a “Covenant Document”? And while you haven’t been well enough to spend a lot of time doing anything other than recuperating you understand from the girl that brings you your tea that some of the laborers in the covenant complex are unhappy. Mundanes can be so, well, mundane! Unto Albus of Calor Novus does Boniface Abbot of the Abbey of St. Martin send greetings. My Son, From the numerous sources within the ecclesiastic community here abouts we have heard that the wood carver Claudio, whom we know to be living with you at Calor Novus, has fallen behind in several of his promised works for said ecclesiastic community. Additionally we have heard that Claudio, having been graced by God with abilities that he rightly and humbly used to glorify God and his Church Militant here on earth, has seen fit to demand more monies for his services to God and Church than has been his wont in times past to require. These questions have been brought forward by various members of the ecclesiastic community and answers have been asked of the Abbey as Calor Novus, and thus Claudio, fall within those areas over which the Abbey has been blessed with possession. In addition it occurs that I have never seen the improved Calor Novus and what you and yours have constructed. Therefore please to be advised that I shall visit on the next day arriving after the noon hour but before darkness. It is my desire that we shall discuss the above issues that I may reply to my compatriots in the community and give them such satisfaction as will please us all. Yours in Christ, Boniface
